USAID Madagascar Livestock Expansion and Stability Program
Livestock serves as a safety net for many families in Atsimo-Andrefana, Madagascar. However, as drought becomes more permanent and cyclones become more powerful, farmers in this traditional livestock-rearing region have found adaptation to these disasters difficult. Through the LIVES project, funded by USAID's Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance, 23,035 individuals are now better prepared to respond to and mitigate the effects of disasters through livestock practices improvements. LIVES focused on three components: Building capacity for livestock farmers, building the small livestock asset base of vulnerable communities, and providing a needed boost to the long-neglected infrastructure (water, wells, fencing), veterinary services and access to animal health inputs required to maintain a healthy herd.
