Reducing disaster risks through improved livestock management

USAID Zimbabwe Livestock for Accelerated Recovery and Improved Resilience

The USAID OFDA USAID Zimbabwe Livestock for Accelerated Recovery and Improved Resilience (ZRR) project helped build household assets through goat production and marketing, to bolster the resilience of vulnerable populations to respond positively to and recover from potential shocks. With the Africa Centre for Holistic Management (ACHM), ZRR trained community livestock workers and farmers in improved practices. Farmers' adoption of improved livestock practices and increased access to animal health services contributed to a decrease in goat mortality rates from 45 percent at the beginning to 14.8 percent by the end of the project. The project restored a livestock asset base for 11,025 farmers - 61 percent of whom were women - and 2,025 households received training and technical assistance.
