Piloting clean energy solutions in Kenya

USAID Powering African Agriculture

Situated along the Great Rift Valley, Kenya has unique access to abundant renewable energy resources, including geothermal energy. Geothermal energy is heat stored in the Earth's crust. Direct-use is the immediate use of geothermal energy for heating and cooling applications. With funding from USAID and in collaboration with Winrock International, the Powering African Agriculture (PAA) project project built the capacity of the Kenya Geothermal Development Company to bring to scale innovative clean energy solutions for use in agriculture. As a result of intensive pre-feasibility studies, the team officially launched four geothermal pilot projects, which successfully showcased to attendees that direct use geothermal energy can be an affordable, efficient, and renewable resource for powering agricultural applications.
