Improving agricultural production, infrastructure, and health for families in Zambia

USAID Sustainable Health and Agriculture for Resilient Populations

With funding from USAID's Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance and in partnership with Project Concern International, Venture37 implemented a holistic, three-pronged approach to increase food security and health in Zambia's Choma and Kazungula districts. The Sustainable Health and Agriculture for Resilient Populations (SHARP) program addressed household food security by enabling farmers to grow more crops not only for household consumption, but also as fodder for their livestock. SHARP provided farmers access to appropriate food and fodder crop harvesting equipment, as well as demonstrations and skills-building training. The project also inclusively engaged the community in improving water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) conditions. Using our Economic Strengthening Toolkit, which was developed under a former USAID-funded project, SHARP showed farmers how they could sell surplus food and fodder, manage earnings to enhance household livelihoods, and expand activities into profitable enterprises.
