The USAID Feed the Future Empowering New Generations to Improve Nutrition and Economic Opportunities (ENGINE) project worked to reduce maternal, newborn and child mortality by improving the nutritional status of women and children. The core initiative was to prevent child under-nutrition during the first 1,000 days, from the start of pregnancy until the child is two years old. As a sub-partner to Save the Children, we worked to increase household incomes and improve access to food among Ethiopia's most vulnerable groups, especially women, youth, and people affected by HIV. ENGINE helped farmers develop better management practices and apply new technologies. To improve access to financial services, ENGINE established community-based savings and loans groups. Over 90,000 individuals, including farmers, agricultural extension workers, development agents, were trained in nutrition-sensitive agriculture to better serve their communities.
