The Tanzanian dairy sector is dominated by smallholder farmers and struggles for a variety of reasons. Approximately 97 percent of Tanzania’s dairy cattle are low-yielding breeds. Meanwhile, smallholder farmers use poor management practices, and seasonal fluctuations affect forage and feed availability. The AgResults Tanzania Dairy Productivity Challenge Project strengthened the ability of smallholder dairy farmers to increase productivity by improving access to and proper use of quality inputs. Carried out in the coastal regions of Tanzania, the project targeted private sector competitors that delivered input bundles and advisory services to smallholder dairy farmers, driving solutions and increasing access to critical dairy inputs including parasite control, improved nutrition products including fodder, vaccinations, and artificial insemination.
Through the prize competition, participants were incentivized to increase the accessibility of high-quality inputs that support animal health and increased dairy production.
Through an increase in milk yields of two-to-five liters per day and decreased animal mortality, farmers saw a marked improvement in their household incomes.
Through more purposeful engagement, dairy sector competitors are building long-lasting, positive relationships with their smallholder farmer customer base.
