Kenya Semi-Arid Livestock Enhancement Support

Improved competitiveness and efficiency of livestock industry

Kenya’s livestock sector provides income and employment for millions of people, and Kenya’s semi-arid lands make up 84 percent of the country’s total land surface.

This USDA-funded Food for Progress project worked to improve the competitiveness of livestock in Kenya's Semi-Arid Zone 2 by increasing productivity and trade of meat value chain products. K-SALES worked with industry leaders and private business service providers to increase producer and processor capacity in providing quality animals, hygienic quality meats, hides and skins. This project supported 78,728 farmers and 3,200 agribusinesses, including women-owned micro, small and medium enterprises, input wholesalers, retailers and exporters.

K-SALES increased agricultural productivity in the sector by developing Business Service Providers, facilitating farmer field schools, increasing access to clean water, improving on-farm and off-farm infrastructure, and facilitating agricultural lending.
